Solent Yamaha's buyers guide to the Yamaha F4, F5 and F6 outboard engines. The video below is Solent Yamaha's expert review of the Yamaha F4B , F5B and F6B Outboard Engine features. It provides prospective buyers with useful information about the Yamaha F4B, F5B and F6B range of features and specifications.
Yamaha F4B Outboard Engine Features
Whether you're a recreational boat owner or a busy professional, choose the engine that will make your boat perform better. Every engine in the Yamaha range uses the latest Yamaha marine technologies, engine layouts and ingenious intake and exhaust systems.
Yamaha's 4-stroke development has been so successful because they build only pure outboard-specification 4-stroke engines from scratch - rather than adapting ordinary automotive engines. Plus Yamaha's specially designed outboard engines don't compromise on power, performance or usability, yet still help preserve our marine environments through the use of pioneering clean-burn technologies.
Yamaha F4, F5 and F6 outboard engines come in two 2 shaft lengths, short shaft (BMHS) suitable for 15 inch transoms with a pitch prop. There is also the long shafts (BMHL) for 20 inch transoms, and for use with heavier displacement boats. Both the long and short shaft engines weigh 27kg and are very robust small units.
Each of the F4, F5 and F6 Yamaha outboards in this range use the same power head. The F4 generates its four horse power at 4,500 revs, the F5 generates its 5 horse power at 5,000 revs and the F6 generates its six horse power at 5,500 revs.
Starting & Storage
Each of these engines has the Easy start feature. Easy start means that the cylinder head is decompressed which makes it very easy to pull the cord and start the engine. Four different shallow water drive points. This versatile little 4 stroke outboard engines can be laid down on the tiller handle, front and sides. Doing this will not cause a hydraulic lock to engage as you may find with some competitor outboard engines.
Propeller & Bush
The Yamaha F4, F5 and F6 have an aluminium propeller as opposed to a plastic one (such as its competitors). They also have a rubber bush instead of a shear pin. The rubber bush works like a clutch and will give if it strikes an object or the sea bottom. This is extremely useful as many of you will have needed to replace a shear pin at sea before for exactly this type of event.
Fuel & Oil
The integral fuel tank holds 1.1 litres of fuel which will provide roughly one hour and fifteen minutes of use as reasonably high revs. You can decide to plug in a remote fuel tanks should you require a longer range. Choose from the Yamaha 12 litre fuel tank or Yamaha 24 litre fuel tanks. You can expect to increase your outboards range to either 12 or 24 hours of outboard engine motoring.
Unique, two-tone cowlingIng
Keeping with the F4, F5 and F6's unique nature, they have a distinctive two-tone body colour, with a white top cowling. It's a refreshingly light colour scheme, and one that reflects the character of these compact and portable engines, and the fun and adventure they offer.
Auxiliary prime pump
A small auxiliary prime pump is fitted to the fuel pipe before the carburettor in the cowling. By ensuring the delivery of fuel to the carburettor, the engine can be started smoothly even after long-term storage.
Easy to carry
When you want to get out on to the water quickly and easily, portability is important. The F4, F5 and F6 are the ultimate in portable power, with a compact build and large carry handles that can be used by one or two people. Carry them to the water, or lift them on to your main boat as an auxiliary and you're away.
CDI Ignition System
You want the fun to start as soon as you get on to the water and the engine to purr with the minimum of fuss. Yamaha ignition systems are 'solid state' components with no moving parts - a design which allows them to deliver the reliable starting and consistent performance for which Yamaha outboards are renowned across the globe.
Yamaha's Ideal Anti-corrosion Protection
You need an engine you can rely on. Yamaha outboards are renowned for their durability and how well they hold value. Central to this is the unique YDC-30 aluminium alloy that protects the engine's exterior parts, and a zinc coating, high-quality stainless steel, and 5-stage exterior coating for long-lasting protection inside and out.
3-position oil leak-free storage system
Transporting your engine to and from the water, the last thing you want to have to deal with is a messy oil leak. Yamaha's unique 3-position oil leak-free storage system offers an easy way to store your engine, whether you're carrying it in a boat, a car, or a trailer.
