Yamaha F2.5A Outboards

Solent Yamaha's buyers guide to a Yamaha F2.5A Outboard Engines.

The video below is Solent Yamaha's expert review of the Yamaha F2.5A outboard engines features. It provides prospective buyers with useful information about the Yamaha F2.5A outboards features and specifications.

Yamaha F2.5 Outboard Engine Features

Shaft Lengths

Yamaha F2.5A outboard engines come in two 2 shaft lengths, short (AMHS) and long (AMHL) shafts. It has a five coat epoxy paint system to protect against corrosion. Both the long and short shaft engines weigh 17kg and are very robust little units.

Each outboard engine provides the owner with a large displacement for the relatively small 2.5 horse power engine size.

Propeller & Bush

The Yamaha F2.5A outboards have an aluminium propeller as opposed to a plastic one (such as its competitors). The 2.5A's also have a rubber bush instead of a shear pin. The rubber bush works like a clutch and will give if it strikes an object or the sea bottom. This is extremely useful as many of you will have needed to replace a shear pin before for exactly this type of event.

These little Yamaha 2.5A's each have an exhaust and a tell-tail. Each comes with a sacrificial anode as standard which help to fight against corrosion should the engine be left in or near salt water.

Gears & Steering

The engine has a proper forward gear using a dog clutch so that both forward and reverse gears can be engaged. Yamaha F2.5A outboard engines are not held down mechanically in forward gear. This feature helps easy engine lifting on beach approaches. There is a locking mechanism for the engine which can be tilted to the desired position and held there. This tilt mechanism has an easy latch to lock and unlock the engines position.

These outboard engines have a stainless steel, steering friction control, located on the stem. This is considered better than competitors engines as they often use aluminium which can corrode and cease. The tighter the friction control the more solid the auxiliary steering will be be.

There is also a friction control for the throttle, this is located aft of the twist grip and is a small butterfly nut. The tighter the control causes the revs you set to be kept. Again a useful feature for auxiliary steering.

Fuel & Oil

The engine has a manual choke for easy cold starts. The integral fuel tank holds 0.85 litres of fuel which will provide roughly 1 hour and fifteen minutes of use as reasonably high revs. Inside the unit there is a glass site gauge on the block to check the engine oil levels. It has a single spark plug which can be accesses via a rubber grommet.

In summary Yamaha F2.5A outboard engines are incredibly reliable robust units. You won't be disappointed. We hope this Solent Yamaha buyers guide to the Yamaha F2.5A outboard engines has been useful.
